INFORMATION maps in Barrine Drive in Commonwealth Park and Acton Park, near intersections with Albert Street, stand in a time warp rust, dis-playing maps and suggested driving routes to many local attractions that either no longer exist or changed names long ago.

The Canberra College of Advanced Education became the University of Canberra in 1990 and the Mugga Lane Zoo closed over a decade ago.

Telecom Tower was renamed Telstra Tower in 1993 and now is Black Mountain Tower, while NATEX was renamed Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPiC) in 1993.

If you follow the signs you could get lost because Caswell Drive has shifted dramatically with the Gungahlin Drive Extension, Gin-

ninderra Falls are no longer publicly accessible, the National Museum of Australia has moved to Acton and the suburbs of Gungahlin have been long established.

It seems Canberra once had a permanent Philatelic exhibition, that is a display of postage stamps, near Barry Drive in Civic deemed worthy of note on the outdated signs, while curiously Questacon is referred to on the map simply as “Science Centre” or “National Science and Technology Centre”.

Missing from the sign are such significant tourist attractions as the newly opened National Portrait Gal-lery, the Arboretum (a step up from the noted Yarralumla Nursery), the National Zoo and Aquarium, CSIRO Discovery Centre and the Canberra Glassworks.

By Kathryn VukovljakSPORTY sisters Rachel and Sarah Crittendon, who call themselves the “Critter Sisters” will run the Great Ocean Road half-marathon on May �5 three-legged, to raise money for National Breast Cancer Foundation. “We’ve always worked well together in a sporting environment,” says Rachael.

“This seemed the perfect way to do some-thing different and challenging together, for a cause which is close to home for every-one.”

Rachel and Sarah say that they want to raise funds and public awareness towards breast cancer because both their grandmoth-ers battled with the disease, “fortunately coming through on the other side”.

According to the girls, they are both

“pretty equal” fitness wise, which helps them keep in sync with each other.

“We go through similar training sessions during the week with our soccer training and game days, and we have tried to come up with training plans to make sure we’re on the same page coming up to the event,” says Rachel.

“Being tied together is actually quite easy, we fall into a rhythm straight away and as we have such close skin contact, our speed/style automatically adjusts itself. Sometimes we actually forget we’re tied together... until our dog Gerald jumps in front of us that is!”

Rachel and Sarah say they push each other to go faster, “or simply just keep going!” says Rachel.

“A half-marathon isn’t all going to be about going faster – the second half is very tough mentally, but having someone literally right next to you and potentially dragging you to

keep going makes it easier.

“Neither of us wants to let the other down which really gives you that extra push.”

WORD that the ACT economy is the best in the country has hit newsstands, but February’s $30 million recurring GST hole in Government reve-nue has left Treasurer Katy Gallagher in a balanc-ing battle, committed to returning the Territory to surplus by 2014-15 with considerably less cash.

“I wish we weren’t in such a tough financial po-sition, but we are so we just have to deal with it,” Gallagher told “CityNews”.

“Under our original plan after the Global Fi-nancial Crisis, we announced a seven-year plan, we then brought that forward a year, that would have us coming into surplus in 14-15, and that’s currently the plan.

“It has been made continually harder by loss of GST revenue, since the Budget update in February we’ve lost $30 million a year under the share of the relativities.”

While the 2011-12 Budget for an even-bigger city is yet to be announced, Gallagher won’t be drawn on where cuts will be made to keep the numbers on track to surplus. The Treasurer says her third Budget, to be delivered on Tuesday, May 3, has been by far the most difficult to produce.

“What we thought we were going to get, we’re no longer getting,” Gallagher said.

“I found this a very challenging Budget to put together.

“Again, it’s a Budget about growth. Growth in our city, consumption of service, disability, child protection, everybody needs more to do more and when you’re seeing a shrinking in your own rev-enue that becomes harder to deliver.

“As you get longer into that recovery it becomes harder to make decisions about how you’re going to get back into surplus. This is where you have to start really delivering the savings.

“$30 million reccurring is a lot of money for a small jurisdiction like us. It’s around 300 jobs, so it is a lot of money that we have to go ‘right, where are we going to make it up?’

“Originally we thought we’d be able to soften some of the savings measures in order to get back to surplus, we’ve had to go back and look at those as well.

“Our own revenue effort, the strength of our housing market has provided an upside to the Budget. It hasn’t been all doom and gloom, but the challenges remain; our wage negotiations with our staff are continuing and that constitutes 50 per cent of the Budget.”

Gallagher says the Government has not made any “major decisions” about increasing tax rev-enue, choosing to wait for recommendations from

the impending Tax Review.“That’s not to say we wouldn’t increase our rev-

enue,” Gallagher said.“The more our city grows and ages, the more

we’re going to have to have a discussion about it, but the Tax Review is due to report back in Au-

gust, so we have not made any decisions to tinker around.”

Election promises and commitments made un-der the Greens-Labor Parliamentary Agreement in 2008 will guide any new initiatives in the upcoming Budget, Gallagher says.

By Eleri HarrisTHE power of the wireless remains untarnished in the modern age with a parable of coincidence and theft emerging from the industrial depths of Fyshwick.

Pat Seears, of Seears Workwear, a regular caller on Mike Welsh’s drive-time program at Canberra’s 2CC, says he has renewed faith in humanity after his broadcast promise of a second chance saw a swag thief come clean.

At 3.50 on Friday afternoon a young man ran out of Seears carrying a $600 double swag, but was spotted by police making his getaway.

“The cops came in and asked, ‘Did someone steal something from your shop? Some guy just came

out carrying a green thing on his back’,” Pat told “CityNews”.

Pat’s son Shane noticed the biggest swag in stack of assorted olive green camping gear was missing.

“We checked the cameras and, sure enough, you could see the swag, his rego and everything. But I wanted to give him a second chance.”

Instead of getting straight back to the police, Pat called 2CC and made a plea for the thief to pay for his ill-gotten goods.

“People heard it on the radio,” Pat says.“Someone called us, he said, ‘I know that bloke, I

saw him carrying the swag out. He looked suspicious because he was running down your driveway’. He [the

caller] was dead accurate in his description.“It all went smooth, we found out where he was on

Monday morning and called his work. I said: ‘Come pay us today and I won’t get the cops on you’, sure enough he came in at 4pm and paid.

“It was a top-of-the-line swag, the best you can buy. He was a young fella, he was just a bit cheeky, so we got him.”

Pat says the thief didn’t apologise, but he’s pleased enough to have been paid and warns other would-be shoplifters against looting Seear’s: If the thief hadn’t come clean, Pat would have passed surveillance foot-age along to the police and the “cheeky” young man would be facing charges.

Radio helps nab the ‘cheeky’ swag thief

THE highs and lows of life are a con-stant for Frank Arsego.

As a career basketball coach for most of his adult years he doubles as a pseudo-physcologist, dealing with other people’s problems in a bid to get the best out of players, while at the same time giving the impression of control during any situation no matter how dire.

His occupation, beyond his role as coach of the Canberra Gunners men’s basketball team, also means that he is called upon to help others.

The Oz Help Foundation, which started in Canberra and has now spread nationally, assists men with a variety of health issues ranging from suicide prevention and mental health to everyday, general well-being.

The foundation encourages men to look after themselves. Many men are not inclined to seek advice for their problems and this is where Oz Help steps up to the plate. Frank works through Oz Help to assist others, while coaching his basketball team.

Frank is also a family man. Wife, Debbie, and son, Luke, are the most important people in his life.

Luke, who is just about to finish Year 12 at Dickson College, has Asperger’s syndrome. This has a great impact on his socialisation, but thankfully, Luke has a positive approach to life and a passion for sport.

The Special Olympics, a worldwide movement for people with an intel-lectual disability, has opened up many doors for Luke.

Armed with this preparedness for any curve ball that life has to offer, Frank was as ready as he possibly could be for the biggest challenge of his life.

His family doctor was pro-active in making sure that when he turned 50 last year, Frank had a full physical, including a test for prostate cancer. He wasn’t all that worried. He had a lifetime as a non-smoker and a non-drinker; but it was a test that would change his life.

His PSA reading was creeping up, enough to cause concern. He was sent to a specialist for further tests.

Frank had a biopsy and the results were sent from Canberra to a hospital in New York.

The test on his prostate came back positive and he was faced with a number of choices including radiother-apy or having the cancerous prostate removed. He opted for the latter after having a body bone scan to make sure the cancer had not spread beyond his prostate. He had his prostate removed on March 1.

The prognosis looks good and Frank’s life has changed. In the past he would never say no to any request for assistance. He says his priorities have

changed; he has become more family focused as is often the case when you have come through a life-changing episode.

As such, Frank has become an ad-vocate for men’s health, encouraging

men 50 years and over to have a pros-tate test, or from 45 years of age if you have a family history.

He has made it his life’s work to make sure that as many men as pos-sible take the test.

Frank says because of the vigilance of his family doctor he had a lucky break. Perhaps though, we are the lucky ones with people such as Frank constantly reminding us to have regu-lar check-ups.

TRUST plays a critical role in politics as it does in any relationship.

It is ironic that Andrew Wilkie, the independent member from Tasmania, is accounting for his “larrikin” behaviour at the Australian Defence Force Academy some four decades ago while current officer cadets are going through some very hard lessons right now. There are issues common to the defence forces and to politics.

When a young officer cadet went to the media because she believed she could not trust the system at ADFA to deal with a serious issue, she really threw a hand grenade into the organisation.

There can be little doubt that the situ-ation was handled badly by the hierarchy – but we will have to wait for the reviews to determine just how badly.

“The male cadet at the heart of the problem is a grub and should be dis-charged. After a fundamental breach of trust and decency of this nature there is no place for him in the military,” according to former head of the Australian Defence Forces, Peter Leahy, who is now the director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra.

Strong words! There is no room for this sort of behaviour in society in general, but the problem is exacerbated in the defence forces because trust is such a critical issue.

In military operations, a co-ordinated

response requires high levels of trust so that soldiers will not hesitate to follow orders. They know that they can rely on those above them and those standing next to them. Trust is the glue that makes a defence force effective.

Trust is also a key element in politics. Oppositions want to ensure that the community cannot “trust” the government and tend to be specific. How often have we heard Liberal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott argue that the current government “cannot be trusted with the economy” or a range of other issues? Governments need to be trusted by the majority of the people or they know they will only last as long as the next election. All politicians seek to protect their integrity and to retain the trust of their constituents.

Wilkie has challenged some wealthy and powerful forces by taking on the issue of gambling. He has also taken on a broad number of non-profit community groups – about 4000 licensed clubs around Australia. Wilkie has made it his business to push the Government into taking action to reduce harms associated with problem gambling.

On the week that Wilkie is making it very clear to the Government that his vote depends on appropriate action being taken on gambling, his past as a “larrikin”

cadet at ADFA runs in the media. I cannot believe that this is a coinci-

dence. The goal of those who oppose the approach that Wilkie has taken is to break down community trust. The propaganda of the World War I demonstrated that the Germans could not be trusted because they ate babies. Andrew Wilkie is accused of making junior cadets salute Nazi style on a Hitler anniversary – something he claims not to remember.

He has never denied being a larrikin – and this sort of action was part and parcel of the inappropriate activities in officer training at the time. It was part of a culture of bullying, it was inappropriate and if he did do it, he has apologised. However, whoever was responsible for ensuring the matter became public has tarnished Wilkie’s political capital.

Taking on powerful forces always carries a risk – but then Wilkie claims he entered politics to make a difference and who really cares what he did 40 years ago as an irresponsible teenager? His constitu-ents and other Australians need to look at the role their politicians play as elected members and ask if they are deserving of our trust in that current position. They need also to ask the extent to which trust be extended to those who benefit from the exposure of yesteryear’s dirt.

AT �5, Canberra’s Bonnie-Jade Ashley has hit the runway to fashion design fame at lightening speed with the latest in a series of Trelise Cooper internships in Auckland.

Bonnie will spend 10 days over the school holidays at Trelise Cooper’s main office in New-market, Auckland, learning the tricks of the trade for the second year in a row.

The famous Kiwi designer is top of the pops for the Year 10 Radford student, who first journeyed to the North Island for work experience at Easter last year after a fruitful family shop-ping holiday.

“I do like to dress up and I like all different styles,” Bonnie told “CityNews”.

“Trelise Cooper’s designs are all really girly, but still sophis-ticated and they’re really beauti-ful clothes.

“My grandma buys her clothes, so when we were over there on a holiday we went into her shop and I asked the lady there how I would go about doing work ex-perience. She gave me a card and

then when I went home I called them up and asked if I could do work experience and they said: ‘Sure! Come over for two weeks’.

“I went over there and I just did little jobs around the place. I did quality control, looking through the outfits and everything and I also was in the design area just sorting through boxes and doing colour swatching, sorting out the colours and fabrics and stuff.

“Just to see how it all works was fascinating and it’s a great opportunity.”

Invited back for NZ Fashion Week in September, Bonnie’s fashion adventure was curtailed by a breast cancer scare days before departure.

“I wasn’t able to go, which was a shame, but I’m hoping to go back this year,” Bonnie says, now with a clean bill of health.

Bonnie’s Italian grandmother Maura taught her how to sew and the teenager has been mak-ing clothes since she was eight, choosing textiles and commerce as her elective subjects in high school.

She’s written to her favourite Australian designers Alannah Hill and Sass and Bide to no avail, but Bonnie says she’ll keep pestering them and doing fash-ion illustration courses at the Whitehouse Institute of Design.

“I want to go to a fashion college in Sydney, I’ll do a degree there and see where that takes me.”

THE time has come for Kevin Rudd to fess up to his other wrong call as Prime Minister – our military commitment to Afghanistan.

I visited Kabul in the 1970s and it was not a pleasant experience. I had to pay protection money at my hotel to station a guard outside the room so it wouldn’t be burgled.

In the marketplace, men bargained with one hand on their daggers. And while I was there some local idiots shot a British chap who was running across the continent for charity. His T-shirt advertised the amount he wanted to raise and they thought he had it on him. When he tried to explain they shot him in both legs.

When the Russians invaded I thought: “They deserve each other.”

Not very charitable, I agree, but I never thought the day would come when I’d say the same about our friends, the Americans.

Not until now. Not until Terry Jones, the Florida pastor, publicly burnt the Koran and a couple of weeks later an Afghan mob took their revenge by murdering eight UN personnel be-cause there were no Americans handy.

If that were the extent of the outrage – a loony Southern pastor and a few ratbag mullahs – it would be quite wrong to condemn Afghans and Americans in toto. But alas it just isn’t so. There are much bigger and more frightening forces at work.

The outrage followed a self-serving protest from the corrupt and contemptible president, Hamid Karzai to bolster his standing with his Muslim zealots. This helped to enrage the mul-lahs who incited the mob to tear the UN workers to pieces. And the event passed without any con-demnation from the world’s Muslim leaders.

On the American side, while President

Obama has condemned Jones, politicians on the Right have found fertile ground in raising fears of “stealth jihad”, their phrase for the spread of Islam in American communities. And former House Speaker and presidential aspirant, Newt Gingrich, talks openly of “creeping Shariah in the US”.

America is becoming ever more a Christian stronghold. Even President Obama constantly parrots the “God bless America” mantra and there’s no doubt that it’s a Christian god of which he speaks.

However, mutual religious bigotry is only one aspect of the way they feed off each other. The other is drugs. Despite – or perhaps because of – the ubiquitous American presence, Afghani-stan produces 90 per cent of the world’s heroin.

And the biggest market for the (illegal) drug is, of course, the US. Indeed, Oruzgan Province where Australia has responsibility, is one of the top producers. We are complicit in the mad-ness.

Early in his presidency Obama agonised over whether to call off the war. Australia, under Rudd, was a willing participant (nerds need to be seen as one of the boys).

But his successor Julia Gillard, who is be-coming some kind of faux Margaret Thatcher, has taken the commitment to a whole new level, promising to stay until 2020!

However, Obama is about to revisit the issue in choosing his new Defence Secretary and Australia will have the chance to put its views. What’s the betting Foreign Minister Rudd be-gins to “nuance” our commitment?

First sod turnedMEMBER for Canberra Gai Brodtmann and MLA for Brindabella John Hargreaves turn the first sod on the $20 million upgrade to the Monaro Highway between Canberra Avenue and Newcastle Street, Fyshwick – the highway’s last 1.5 kilometres of unduplicated road. The upgrade is jointly funded, with the Federal Government contributing $18.5 million and the balance from the ACT. It is due to be completed by mid next year.

ANDREW Leigh is a community kind of guy; in fact, he wrote the book on it, and now with 15 mobile office dates tucked under his belt, the MP for Fraser is jumping on the town hall bandwagon with a series of com-munity forums on issues of national importance.

Covering education, climate change, community revitalisation and economic reform, the former ANU eco-nomics professor and author of “Dis-connected: The Decline of Community and the Fraying of Social Fabric in Modern Australia” says it’s all about giving constituents the chance to com-municate directly with their elected representative.

“The average TV soundbite is seven seconds,” Leigh told “CityNews”.

“And I know some people are curi-ous about their representatives, they want to hear the whole paragraph beyond the seven.

“We’ve all got issues we’re passion-ate about, like the beauty of wildflow-ers, and I like to get an understanding of community perspectives.”

Acknowledging attendees of community forums tend to hit the grey-haired mark over a younger population percentile, Leigh recently held a “welcoming the babies” event at Commonwealth Park to “connect families with community service providers” and is running a Big Ideas

Competition for those under 26 in his electorate.

Asking young Fraser residents to submit three-minute videos with their bright ideas on policy, Leigh hopes to encourage young people to remain po-litically engaged in their community.

“Part of it is getting new ideas into the political process,” Leigh said.

“The other is making a contribution to change the culture. If a 10-year-old puts together a video, they might see politics not as an elite sport when they’re older.”

Although Leigh is a back-bencher with less than a year under his belt and limited party clout, he says many

of the issues he’s confronted with in the street or forum can be solved through either approaches to departments, ministers, local members of the ACT Legislative Assembly or educating the concerned community.

“Sometimes the department has made a mistake, but most often people haven’t understood what the Gov-ernment has done. They’re usually happier if they know the Government hasn’t been capricious and cruel, they just want an explanation,” he said.

“When I started the mobile offices I thought it was to serve the community, but actually it makes you a better MP when you’re able to texture issues with

real stories and human beings.“It stops politics becoming vague

and being about millions and billions, it becomes about what policy actually means and you don’t get that by spend-ing time on the internet.

“I find being able to solve problems personally very satisfying. When I was an economics professor I rarely solved anything quickly, it’s a nice feeling solving problems in the same day.”

“It used to be a lot of people I met out would be asking me about setting up a small business, now I’m in this new role I can empower people to do that and give advice to people who want to get started.”

From May, Brodtmann will host three seminars on starting a small business, reading financial statements and understanding superannuation with the hope passing on her knowl-edge will help others build the local economy.

“It’s all about empowering people with the skills to make a difference,” Brodtmann says.

“Small business. It’s my background, passion, interest.

“The first seminar is targeted at people who have a small kernel of an idea: people who are in the public

service, mums returning to work, defence personnel, anyone. There’s a lot of great ideas out there, people just need to know how to start.

“I’m also really concerned that I have female friends who take time out to have babies and for those five years there’s no super, they need to plan this whole process.”

Edition of delicious ironyI ENJOYED the delicious irony of the “CityNews” April 14 edition: Michael Moore arguing that chaplains ought to be removed from Government schools; Nick Jensen saying that society was losing the cultural awareness of religion’s message, to its detriment; and, three pages ear-lier your reporter Wendy Johnson’s story, “Amazing Grace comes in from the cold” that sang the praises of St Vincent de Paul. I hope the headline was an intentional use of the religious cultural reference. And, I hope that Moore is okay with the ACT and Federal Government using religious charities and organisations for a signifi-cant proportion of their spending on their social agenda.

While I’m at it, Moore needs to know that there is no impediment for “Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Shintoists or for atheists” being trained as chaplains and employed in government schools; they will be taught, like the current chaplains have been, that they are not to proselytise, and that they are to treat equally people of all beliefs. We accept the holiday...IT is good to see that the pros and cons of school religious education are both given space in your article “Is there a place for religion in schools?” (CN, April 14), but disappointing that Michael Moore is so lacking in his understanding of Christian traditions.

Opposition to the Judeo-Christian heritage would have made little sense to the First Fleeters and those who followed them over the next century or more. When even the garbage and re-cycling collec-tions are deferred on Good Friday, why should small children be denied the treat of an Easter egg on the last day of school lest it offends one parent?

So how can it be that “Christian cus-toms” should be left out of the school sylla-bus when all are happy to accept a holiday at Christmas and Easter and ought to be taught why such events exist?

History was a subject that all children were once taught in order to help each gen-eration identify their place in the journey of hom*o sapiens. As one gets older it seems that there is a latent hunger in society to know where they came from and where they fit into the pattern of life, which is why so much time and effort is put into the study of family trees. Of course, the matter of separating church from state remains, but if Mr Moore is passionate about the issue he should start a campaign to excise from the list of gazetted holidays the three Christian holy days of Good Friday, Easter Day and Christmas Day. Ideology over helping MICHAEL Moore’s solution to the prob-lem is to get rid of Christian chaplains from schools (“No place for religion in schools”, CN April 14), but what is the problem?

Have parents risen up with one voice and called for this? Have teachers or prin-cipals presented anecdotes of children being “brainwashed” with the mention of certain well known but “anachronistic mythologies”? Not even close. In fact Moore’s view on this matter is not about helping kids and teachers, but about pure secular fundamentalist ideology.

The reason why Christian chaplains were given this support was because hun-dreds of them were doing such a great job around the nation on a self-funded basis before the Federal Government decided to lend support – as they have done for many other “good things” around the nation and beyond.

Before Michael gets the chance to is-sue an ex cathedra edict on the matter, he should do enough research to give his decision a shot at credibility. But I forgot. He has an opinion. A doctrine in fact. Me-thinks his secularism is a tad too religious to be reliable. Brian Medway, Dunlop

Ethics and religionI FIND myself somewhere between Michael Moore and Nick Jensen on the question of religion in schools. In my view the protection of agreed rights and undertaking of agreed responsibilities by members of a society can only be assured by political/legal systems inasmuch as there is a well-developed sense of ethics and a threshold measure of agreement on ethical principles in that society. The question is how the state best might im-partially facilitate education in ethics in a multi-cultural society.

Ideally, the laws, and the rights and re-sponsibilities they embody, and the public policy and programs extant at any one time of a democratic state should reflect the ethical principles broadly supported by its citizens. In practice, there are many laws and policies which are only sup-ported from time to time by a bare major-ity and even by a minority. It is also true that some laws policies and programs can be quite widely broken, thwarted or sub-verted by significant minorities or even, on occasion, majorities.

States vary in these respects. Other things being equal, such as the coercive force employed by the state, a nation with a strong mono-culture will experience greater congruence between the institu-tions of the state and the ethics of its citizens. But a multi-cultural nation with a high level of education in and public dis-cussion of ethical philosophy might also experience fewer of the aforementioned problems.

Ethics and religion are inextricably intertwined. Education exclusively based on one particular religion and its ethics should certainly not be a part of the state education system. However, all children should get education in religion and eth-ics, not just those who are sent to faith community schools or “Sunday” schools. But this education should be impartial and based in a philosophical approach. The state should ensure that this is pro-vided. The curriculum would have to be developed with the close involvement of the various faith communities. Robin Brown, Yarralumla

The coin, designed and issued by the Royal Australian Mint, features a detailed sculpted portrait of the couple, which went through a highly consultative approval process with the Queen.

Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten said it was fitting for the Royal Australian Mint, on behalf of Australia and the Australian Government, to continue the tradition of honouring and preserving royal history as they have done so well in the past.

“This royal wedding will capture the hearts of millions around the world and, as we have done so in the past with royal celebrations, a special circulating coin will be released to the public to commemorate this important occasion in royal history,” he said.

“There are many royal collectibles out there but this circulating coin creates the excitement of checking your change to see if there happens to be a collectible right there in your pocket.”

Royal Australian Mint’s renowned coin sculp-tor Vladimir Gottwald designed the coin using images of the couple as inspiration.

The same design on the circulating 20-cent coin is also on the a collectible uncirculated 50-cent coin and as part of the Royal Wedding Set released in March.

“The 2011 Royal Collection has presented all Australians with the opportunity to secure a precious keepsake of the fairytale marriage of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton,” said Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Ross MacDiarmid.

The 50-cent Uncirculated Royal Wedding Coin, which can be pre-ordered, is on sale from April 30. The 50-cent Selectively Gold-Plated Royal Wedding Coin is only available in the two-coin set, which can also be ordered now.

I HAVE a passionate hatred for public art in the ACT; it’s not that it’s mostly rubbish and lacks imagination, it’s more personal than that.

I decided I wanted to become an artist and create a piece of public art which would not only live forever but say something. But my application for a paltry $600,000 of public money has been ignored.

The idea came to me early one Sunday morning when walking around Lake Ginninderra marvel-ling at the many gifts God or, more accurately, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope had bestowed upon us.

I thought about God then I thought about Jon, and I thought: “God has many, some say too many, statues, figurines and public images, but our Jon didn’t really have anything to commemorate his devotion to public art in the capital.” And that’s when the light globe lit in my head: A barbecue, the Jon Stanhope Public Barbecue!

I know humility would prevent Jon from ever suggesting any monument to himself, so I was more than prepared to “fire-up” the project for when he’s gone.

My plan called for a six-metre-high, stubbie-shaped, Besser-brick barbecue, complete with dual, stainless-steel hot plates and a solar-panelled stubbie cap (to appease greenies on the public art funding panel). Cutting edge, but understated, as befits the Chief.

As an artist I’m staunchly inclusive. I wanted the com-munity to have a “steak” in the JSPBBQ by buying “bricks” for $500 apiece, put their name on it and be publicly cemented to Jon forever. Cutting edge, it’s never been done before and it would have been self-funding!

Sadly, my application was rudely ignored; but I’m not defeated. I’ve already begun an application for funding for another piece of political public art with a working title of “Kate” – a big transparent fibreglass “K” slap-bang in the middle of the Civic bus interchange.

But here’s the “post-modernist initiative” aspect of my dream piece – it’s easily interchange-able (at the the interchange, get it?) from a transparent “K” to a big, beige “Z” when or if the need arises. I hope to have it finished around, oh, election time next year.

After all, public art must say something, if you know what I’m saying?

Coe’s ‘illogical’ rantYOUR report on Liberal MLA Alistar Coe’s response to the subject of “peak oil” in the Legislative Assem-bly (“Cranky Coe on cars, socialists and Greens, CN April 7) is revealing and worrying.

Coe is quoted as saying that “elements of peak oil are just a little bogus and that the Greens have a de-termination to destroy our society as we see it”.

He then goes on to say that they (the Greens) have an “ideological hatred of the car and the freedom it represents” and that they “dislike families”. These and other absurd comments reveal Coe’s ignorance and misrepresentation of what are very serious is-sues. It brings into question the calibre and suitabil-ity of Coe as an elected representative and also the lack of talent in local Liberal ranks.

If quoted correctly, it reveals that he is unable to engage in rational and sensible debate. His illogical ranting and raving shows that he, and perhaps other Liberals, just don’t get it or more likely don’t want to get it. By the way Alistair, its not about the car, its what type of energy will power them in the future!

Dining review ‘unfair’HAVING been a fan of D’Browes cooking for many years I found the [Wendy Johnson’s] review (“When looking good isn’t always enough”, CN, March 31) unfair and plainly way off the mark.

I want negative reviews when warranted. I paid a visit to D’Browes [restaurant, Narrabundah] last week to check whether the high standards had dropped.

The answer was an emphatic “NO”. The food and presentation were at the usual high

standard. If Ms Johnson visited on a bad day (for her or the chef), I would encourage her to re-visit and take an open mind. Damien, I am sure, does not need her patronage, but he certainly does deserve either a retraction or a re-assessment.

Do you trust the Greens?I NOTICE the ACT Greens continue to promote the idea of only investing ACT public servants’ superan-nuation in “ethical” investments.

Apart from the fact that I find the economic cred-ibility of many Green schemes close to non-existent, I would caution ACT public servants in meekly accept-ing such a proposal.

For example, they should note demise of Viridis Clean Energy which went into liquidation a couple of weeks ago. Viridis was an energy infrastructure fund which invested in diversified global clean energy as-sets and the return on shareholder funds was minus 84.6 per cent over the past 12 months, minus 71.3 per cent over three years and minus 54 per cent over five years. Do you trust the Greens to do much better?

Jon Stanhope the Superior for acknowledging the valuable work we do in despising public art. It’s a thankless task, but someone has to do it.

However, it is not well known outside redneck phil-istine circles (current membership: 1), that we actu-ally want to see public art in Canberra, but not the current batch of complete and utter rubbish, which is only good for rotten-tomato throwing practice.

What we need is a 20-metre statue of Stanhope the Truly Fantastic on top of Capitol Hill looking both visionary as he stares away over Canberra to the Brindabellas and beyond to the far distant galaxies and contemptuous as he sneers at the mere contempt-ible mortals who gather timidly around his gigantic, yet inspiring feet. I think I’m going to blubber, excuse me.

Stick to your guns, Simon!ON the judge-alone trials debate between John Pur-nell SC (CN, April 7) and Simon Corbell (CN, April 14) I find myself very much in the Corbell camp.

The fact that the legal representatives for clients accused of murder in the ACT unanimously choose judge-alone trials is a clear indication that in their professional judgement you have a much better chance of being found not guilty of murder by a judge than a jury.

The track record of ACT judges confirm that view. When we get to the stage that the legal outcome for people taking the life of a human being in Queanbey-an is generally much harsher than that for another person doing the same thing a few kilometres away across the border makes the law look like an ass.

I also have the view that to ask (as in a judge-alone trial) one person to decide the innocence/guilt of the accused as well choosing their punishment is an un-reasonable impost.

A jury verdict is a communal act: No one person is responsible for deciding the fate of the accused. The burden falls on 12 sets of shoulders not just one. Jury members also bring to the case a smattering of views representative of the community rather than one per-son’s narrow, black-letter law view of what “beyond reasonable doubt” means. Stick to your guns Simon!

Congratulations for keeping this abhorrent behav-iour in the media. It must be talked about, discussed and everyone involved including parents, teachers, schools, sporting clubs and coaches encouraged to stop any form of bullying.

These people are around children constantly and have the best opportunity to stop this cruel, senseless behaviour which always has long-term effects and, in many instances, fatal consequences.

Let’s start a campaign of no bullying and start writing about any person, company, school or organi-sation that has implemented successful programs, actions or whatever that has achieved results. Even if one more parent addresses this issue as a result of your great article, that will be saving the lives of many, many children.

Never mind the rugby, Lily, play football!WHAT a shame that Rugby Union won’t let 12-year-old Lily Pearson play for her local under-13 team because she’s a girl (“Lily’s last big kick at goal”, CN April 14).

I read that she is now looking for another sport to consider playing. We would welcome Lily in our football ranks as there is a very popular and strong pathway in place for young athletes such as her from youth through to senior leagues and all the way to National League participation in the Westfield W-League with Canberra United.

This pathway and the open encouragement of girls at any level in soccer represents a key point of differ-ence to that of other football codes like rugby union.

Indeed, Lily could one day play soccer in the Olym-pic Games or a FIFA world championship and even get a university soccer scholarship in the US to sup-port her career.

And, if she wants to play with the under-13 boys’ league in football, then she can. Football won’t dis-criminate against Lily because of her gender.

Don’t give upI , TOO, have a daughter who loves her football (“Lily’s last big kick at goal”, CN April 14). At the age of 15 she filled in one Saturday afternoon as a player for the then North’s Women’s Rugby team and never looked back.

After half a season she was recommended to try out for the ACT Women’s Representative side and once again, never looked back. She was, in 1999 selected to play in that squad, but yes, the age restriction came to the fore.

The Australian Women’s Nationals were being held in Perth and she was advised to appeal to the ARU for

special dispensation and with supporting references from sports doctors and her GP. The fact she would turn 16 a few days prior to the nationals starting, she was given dispensation to play.

She continued to play in the local competition for the now Uni North’s Club (for 10 years) and continued to be a player in the ACT Women’s Rugby Team for eight of those years and and continues to play rugby.

My advice: Retain that love and commitment you have for the game. Yes, keep involved by way of be-coming a referee, contact clubs that do have a wom-en’s team and hopefully, you may get to play before you turn 18.

Hopefully, the ARU can also give you special dis-pensation as well when you are 16 or 17 to play in the open Women’s comp. Good Luck and don’t give up on that love for the sport.

I CAUGHT Sydney Dance Company director Rafael Bonachela flat-out during the last week of “� Breaths” in Sydney.

That’s just half of the program we’ll be seeing in Canberra during early May in the program destined for the Movimentos Festival in Wolfsburg, Germany, straight after us.

And no, this won’t be an out-of-town tryout – it’ll be a real world pre-miere, because Bonachela has already set the program which, he says, fulfils the Australia Council’s funding for the SDC to be an international touring company, something it hasn’t done in a while. This year it is also travelling to rural WA and Darwin.

“This is where we live,” says Bonachela, just into his third year directing the company. They will also be dropping in on New York, London and Barcelona.

So how come we can call it a world premiere, given that one work has al-ready been seen in Sydney? Well, this is a double bill comprising “6 Breaths” and a totally new work, “LANDforms”, where Bonachela and composer Ezio Bosso respond to the land.

The first work, set to cello and piano, is a response to the act of breathing – life breath, breathless-ness, the crying breath, in the same breath, a whisper and the last breath.

Bonachela has no doubts that his intentions will be crystal clear as they are danced by “a very, very strong ensemble” of dancers, some of whom have been with the company for years and some who joined in January.

As for “LANDforms,” that in Bonachela’s words is “totally universal.” Press reports that it is based on the Australian landscape are inaccurate, he says, although the motifs of rain, sunshine and

clouds will resonate here as much as overseas.

Bonachela exudes confidence. And why not? The Sydney Dance Compa-ny’s shows are consistently packed out and the record-breaking numbers will see the double bill go into our big theatre. His now legendary collabora-tion with Bosso has people rushing to buy his CDs.

While Bonachela didn’t start out with Bosso as a collaborator, he says

“music is always something I have had,” even in his earliest days with the Ballet Rambert in London, for which he commissioned a score. But then in 2008 he met Bosso by accident and they clicked. The result was “360°” and that was that. Describing it as “a meeting of minds,” he explains that they combine their musical and dance ideas in a kind of R&D. “Music deals with emotion, and so do I,” Bonachela says.

They must be doing something right because audiences keep asking “where can I buy the music?”

You don’t meet many directors as optimistic as Rafael Bonachela. “You can only feel happy when you’re in a place two years and you’re going up and up.”

THIS ongoing project had its genesis in 2006 when principal artists from Ernabella, Hermannsberg and the Tiwi Islands attended the National Ceramics Conference in Brisbane. Collaborative exchanges between the communi-ties and the ANU Ceramics Workshop at the ANU resulted in the exhibition, “Three Communities One Language”, at the Watson Arts Centre in July 2009.

“Two Communities – the Language of Clay”, the result of a just-completed second residency at ANU and Strathnairn, comprises almost 100 pieces from Tiwi artist Robert Purantatameri and Ernabella artists, featuring Alison (Milyika) Carroll, Carol (Anilyuru) Williams and Malpiya (Irpintiri) Davey amongst others.

Ernabella artists are increasingly recognised for their ability to incorporate new techniques and media into their art lexicon and the evolution over two years in design and execu-tion of these ceramic works, particularly from the featured artists is obvious, and at times stunning.

Many of the decorative platters show a marked increase in technique and the finely worked, intricate designs are redolent with a sense of place.

Purantatameri has added to his distinctive colour palette of finely rendered black body-markings and depictions of marine animals on deep brown clays. Vessels incorporate greens, creams and a unique ghostly grey. There are new forms with delightful proportions and new techniques that, in one case, transform the rounded and sinuous to the subtly four-sided.

Although a somewhat chaotic installation, the remarkable qualities of this highly collectible body of work shine.

CANADIAN-born violinist Lara St John, one of the world’s most glamorous and exciting violinists, will be here for the Canberra International Music Festival and director Christopher Latham, a violinist himself, can hardly believe his luck.

Despite the notoriety of having appeared nearly nude with a violin on the cover of her 1996 Bach album (“that’s old history”), which sold 25,000 copies, St John is doubtful that there’s anything intrinsically sexy about the violin.

“All music is sexy,” she asserts. Mind you, she does play on one of the most musically voluptu-ous instruments in the world, a priceless early Guadagnini violin.

St John claims with some pride that she knows a bit about the real world. At age 13 she and her brilliant violinist brother Scott studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. At age 16 she found herself at the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium in Russia, where she acquired Russian with a Moscow twang.

After an unpopular teacher suddenly defected, leaving her high and dry, she realised she didn’t know anything about life.

“Everyone thought I was bonkers, but I put my violin in the closet and went to Kazakhstan, Yugoslavia and Armenia – I did it for myself,” she says.

During these Eastern wanderings she came into contact with gypsy music, which remains a special hobby.

St John is a woman of distinctive opinions and tastes. She loves reptiles, for instance. Frustrated

with the music industry, she formed her own label, Ancalagon Records. And she hates being labelled a child prodigy. Though she started playing the violin at 2½ years, she’s been doing it ever since, so the word is meaningless to her.

She is nothing if not adventurous when it comes to music and says of Australian composer Matthew Hindson, “he’s not like anyone else”.

When his publisher Faber sent her some of his work in 2000 she “was really struck… I have a five-minute rule, after five minutes I throw it into the garbage.”

She didn’t and recorded Hindson’s violin concerto in 2008 and is now also performing his new work “Maralinga.”

The highlights for her first visit to Can-berra will include Bach’s “Chaconne” and Elena Kats-Chernin’s “Torque” with the Danish String Quartet at the Albert Hall on May 13, the premiere of Peter Sculthorpe’s “The Shining Island” at St Christopher’s Cathedral on May 14 and the premiere of Graeme Koehne’s “True His-tory of the Kelly Gang for Strings” at the National Museum Hall on May 15.

A few years ago St John came to Australia on holiday. The highlight? Crocodiles in Darwin. She’s recently toured rural towns with the ACO’s emerging musicians’ ensemble ACO2 (“I’m well past emerging,”) but she’s never been to Canberra, which she hears is “the Ottawa of Australia”.

To festival director Latham, it’s actually the “City Of Music”. In an action-packed 11 days, there will be 34 concerts in national institu-tions, embassies and even on the streets – the “Sounding the Axis” concert on May 18 will explore Constitution Avenue and the Molonglo in a movable feast that pays tribute to the Burley Griffin designs.

“POTICHE” (M)

ROWAN Joffe’s adaptation of Graham Greene’s crime novel first filmed by John Boulting in 1947 is as disturbing as Greene intended.

Pinkie, an ambitious, unprincipled young enforcer in a gang providing protection to betting shops, murders an enforcer from the competing Colleoni (Andy Serkis) gang.

A possible witness is Rose who waits table in the teashop run by Ada (Helen Mirren), a woman of wide life experience in a relationship with betting-shop owner Corkery (John Hurt). A Colleoni henchman murders Pinkie’s boss. Anger and tension build between the gangs.

Pinkie marries Rose to take the benefit of the rule that a wife may not give evidence against a husband unless she agrees.

Ada and Pinkie’s colleague Dallow (Nonso Anozie) rush to Beachy Head to avert a tragedy that gives special resonance to the term “cliff-hanger”.

The film does a creditable job of re-creating its 1964 setting to give veracity to its background of the mods/rockers riots. As Pinkie, Sam Reilly displays substantial malevolence. Greene and Joffe’s writing of Rose (Andrea Riseborough), whose welfare should dominate the drama rather than terminating Pinkie’s murderous behaviour, doesn’t raise our concern for her being not the sharpest pencil in the box to the level it deserves.

WITH joyously unrestrained, well-informed, vocabulary, this road movie – written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost – affection-ately and perceptively satirises American customs, social values and populist culture,

creationism, with a CG hero evocative of ET, an uninhibited romance and a strong lampoon of the clandestine law enforce-ment pervading US reality and movies.

Britishers Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost) collaborate on writing and illustrating pulp SF. Needing a sea change, they rent a mobile home from which to see America. They witness a road accident from which emerges the alien Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) fleeing agents commanded by The Big Guy (Sigourney Weaver). The trio overnights in a trailer park run by an obsessive creationist Christian and his winsome daughter Ruth (Kristen Wiig).

The trio becomes a quartet. The journey becomes increasingly frenetic. They meet a comprehensive cross-section of Americans as perceived by Hollywood.

We laugh a lot as the story unfolds, great fun with credibility that scarcely rises

above zero yet somehow makes sense. Continuing a filmography that began with “Shaun Of The Dead”, “Paul” confirms Pegg and Frost as significant players in fantasy comedy movies. Enjoy!

At Dendy, Hoyts and Limelight

THIS is a remake of a 1977 French telemovie that, in turn, was an adaptation of a stage play.

Director Francois Ozon is noted for his freewheeling style. Some might say that “Potiche” (French for “trophy housewife”) wheels a little too freely in making naive observations of life.

Suzanne’s dowry was her father’s um-brella factory, which her selfish husband Robert now runs with iron discipline, bullying his employees, bonking his boda-cious red-headed secretary, patronising an establishment (closed Thursdays) of not the best repute and forgetting Suzanne’s birthday.

When the workers kidnap Robert, Suzanne seeks help from local mayor and MP Babin. This pair once briefly were an item. Babin persuades the workers to release Robert. Shortly after, Suzanne takes his place while he is hospitalised.

Susanne and her children soon have the factory running better than ever. Then Robert comes home.

Ozon delivers this soft social commen-tary as feel-good farce. As Suzanne, Cath-erine Deneuve projects real vigour while looking matronly rather than the elegant beauty of former years. Gerard Depardieu, no longer the beautiful man who shared a private smile with my wife when he was in Sydney, is forceful as Babin. Fabrice Luchini takes the film’s performance honours as Robert.

THE Michelin star is coveted in the culinary world; and those working at this level are at the top of their game.

So Canberra is blessed that chef Clement Chauvin has joined Sage where he creates stunning-looking, stunning-tasting dishes, executed with precision.

Clement is from France where he worked in the two-Michelin-star Pic and Nicolas La Bec. So why is he now in the kitchen of a small 1920s heritage building at Gorman House? True love. He met a Canberran on a trip down under, married and moved here.

If you’ve never been to Sage (or at least, not lately) there’s lots new: Refurbished dining room; outdoor deck, a floor team chosen for experience and style. And all of this under the direction of brothers/own-ers Peter and Michael Harrington.

Sage – a “progressive French bistro” – is committed to Australian produce. Dinner is two courses ($55) or three ($65) and you select from five entrees, mains or desserts. It’s all wonderful, so if you find it hard to choose I recommend closing your eyes and pointing to any spot on the menu. You won’t be disappointed.

My seared scallops with chestnut cream, chorizo, celery tips and molasses, made from Pedro Ximenez Spanish Sherry featur-ing sultry sultana tones, was marvellous.

The chorizo is lightly smoked so it does not compete with the delicate scallops. The slow-braised pork belly with a trio of compressed melon (adding punch to the flavor) had beautiful crackling and a sweet, smooth pistachio paste. The quail pithivier (little pie) was enhanced with stilton cream and a sexy port reduction.

Mains included pan-roasted ocean trout with tiny French lentils, a prawn parcel (some may love the texture, others may

not) and a bisque sauce. The crisp-skin duck breast came with celeriac puree and spiced ganache and the caramelised lamb rump was melt-in-the-mouth.

Then there was the 12-hour braised Wagyu brisket. My, oh, my. The parsnip fondant was created with garlic, thyme, rosemary and butter, roasted in the oven and de-glazed with honey (see what I mean about superb execution?). The meat is sous-vide (French for “under vacuum”) and cooked for 12 hours at 82 degrees, a method producing exceptional flavours. And another French touch was evident with the peas served with lardons, onion and cos lettuce.

We were convinced to share an unbeliev-ably light, yet decadent, dark chocolate soufflé with honeycomb ice cream. It’s a dream, or “c’est un rêve”, as this creative French chef may say.

Now he’s hard at work on an unusual project with painter Micky Allan for Arts in the Valley, the biennial three-day festival held in Kangaroo Valley and put together by director Belinda Webster. Pereira and Allan will create a new work in the lounge room of the home Cedar Grove while the audience looks on.

A highlight of the festival will be the garden sculpture exhibition and other artists include Murrumbateman harpist Alice Giles, pianist Ian Munro, Genevieve Lacey on recorder, The Song Company and Shoalhaven Aboriginal dance troupe, Yuin Ghudjargah, performing with TaikOz Quartet.

WITH fragrant lavender lining the driveway, foliage aromas from scented-leaf geraniums and herbs including mint, rosemary, thyme, basil, coriander, marjoram, oregano and sage, Barbara Preston’s shady O’Connor garden is a feast for the senses.

“I love perfume,” she says. “I have about a dozen osmanthus roses, among other species, which are rather ordinary-looking, but which have a penetrating and evocative perfume in autumn and early winter; especially welcome at this time of year.”

Barbara’s garden, which stretches out on to the nature strip of her corner block, will be open to the public on the weekend of April 30 and May 1 as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme.

The garden has been open in previous years at different times, and Barbara says that even at this “melancholy” time of year there’s still much to be enjoyed.

“In autumn, wisteria, dogwoods, maples, berberis colour richly, and I love the variety and

interest,” she says. “There’s a sense of beauty and calmness.

“It’s an eclectic garden, and it’s still trying to give a lot to the birds with the low, dense plant-ings and deep leaf and bark litter which supports insects that in turn feed small scrubwrens and fairy-wrens and larger magpies and kookabur-ras.”

Perfume, says Barbara, also comes from the boronias, perfumed and hybrid camellias, various michelias and perfumed magnolias, daphnes, lilac, rhododendron pittosporum, lily-of-the-val-ley, violets, potted citruses, gardenias, and some eucalypts.

Barbara says that much of the garden is designed to be appreciated from inside the house. “I made the pond so I can look out when it’s cold and I’m inside drinking a cuppa!

“And from mid-winter, the ruby red allocasua-rina littoralis flowers glow with the low winter sun behind them, and it’s like a scatter of rubies out there.”

Barbara’s garden at 21 Boobialla Street, O’Connor, is open Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 10am-4.30pm. Adults $8, children under 18 are free. Funds raised will go to the Australian Open Garden Scheme and Amnesty International Australia. More information at www.opengarden.org.au.

“EVERYTHING here has a history, a soul, a story to it, and I really love that,” says Nanette Louchart-Fletcher of her laid-back and welcoming Higgins home, shared with her husband Olivier and their two young daughters.

“When we got married we had noth-ing, and initially our ‘op-shopping’ was a financial decision, although we really liked the look of that style, too,” she says.

“Nothing in our house is new – except maybe our mattresses!”

Cushions made out of retro tea-towels, blackboards in ornate frames, op-shop furniture and piles and piles of gorgeous fabric make up Nanette’s relaxed style. “Since I was a kid I’ve collected vintage dresses, back when it was cheap!” she says. “So I suppose my home is an extension of that.”

Blogger, seamstress and floral designer, Nanette says she’d describe their look as “maximalist!”

“We both like stuff that has a narrative,” she says. “I don’t like sterile environments. I enjoy searching through op shops, or looking out for deceased estate auctions for fabric and furniture. I always have in

my mind the colour of the wood of what we already have, so things will vaguely co-ordinate.”

Her best bargains, she says, are a leather Moroccan-style pouffe that she picked up for $3 from Jamison Trash and Treasure, and their record-player sideboard, which cost $100.

“It’s probably one of the more expensive

items we’ve found, but it’s wonderful and was in perfect condition,” she says. “We prefer to listen to records for the sound, but we’ve linked up our iPods to it as well so we have the best of both worlds!”

Nanette says that Olivier is very good with building work, and that he worked closely with their architect on the house. “He knows instinctively where people will

gather in a space,” she says. “He also likes things to be in set positions, while I move things around all the time.

“Soft furnishings are more my thing, so we work well together. His influence makes the home a little more masculine actually, which is quite nice. And his European back-ground means he has a different sensibility in terms of art.

“We do have arguments about things like paint colours though, and he has very strong opinions!”

Nanette says she loves building things up slowly, over time. “I have an image in my mind of what I want for the house, and I’m

sort of always on the look out for certain things. But it has to be exactly the right thing.

“It can take me years to find what I’m after. I’ll often walk out of a shop and think about an item I like, and if it’s still on my mind a few days later I’ll go back for it. If it’s still there it was meant to be.

“I believe in the culture of make-do and mend, of travelling lightly, and if you buy anything, make sure it’s special and that it’s to keep.”

The many flowers ofour blustery autumnAS I write this, suddenly autumn has arrived with blustery, bitterly cold winds.

Until the second week in April, autumn was magic with unseasonably warm days and nights. It simply could not last forever and this is the very beauty of Canberra with our four seasons. Although on occasions we do get the four seasons in one day!

Discussing this with folk who recently moved here from North Queensland their comment went like this: “At least when it is cold you can put on extra clothes, but with the sticky tropical heat there is only one way to get cool, sit in front of an air conditioner. In tropical gardens, one sees the same old evergreen plants year round, whereas every season in Canberra provides a refreshing change”. A good reason to live here.

MANY perennial plants are continuing to flower. One of the most interesting illustrated here is Sedum “Herbstfreude” or more commonly known as Sedum specta-bile “Autumn Joy”. This is an unusually tall succulent, which grows to 100cm tall with numerous interesting aspects.

Firstly, the pale green, almost white

flowers appear in late summer on thick, tall stems. Then, as autumn approaches, the flowers turn to a pale pink, gradually changing to a bronze and finally a deep burgundy colour.

They remain like this until the first frosts, which will kill the top growth. This is the time to cut the plant to ground level. Now, the amazing part of the story is those new, little shoots will start growing almost immediately in winter and are not affected by frost. By spring, the leaves will be almost 30cm tall and together with the flower stems will attain their full height by late summer, by which time the process starts all over again.

After a couple of years they can be divided into a dozen or more new plants. Plant in full sun and this will grow in the poorest of soils, even gravelly soils. The white variety is a little harder to find, although in my opinion this is not as spectacular as S. “Autumn Joy”.

IT is spring-bulb planting time, but what about the autumn-flowering bulbs such as

Nerines? If planted now they will not flower until next autumn, 2011. However, I noticed Heritage Nursery in Yarralumla have potted these up early in the season to enable you to enjoy the flowers over the next few weeks. When they have finished flowering, simply plant in a sunny spot in the garden where they will rapidly multiply over the coming years.

A REMINDER that autumn time is feeding time and one important plant nutrient to apply to all plants now is seaweed liquid plant nutrient. Besides all the benefits of more than 60 trace elements and, more importantly, promoting root growth, it builds the plant’s resistance to frost by lowering the temperature at which plant cells freeze. I recommend giving all your plants an application of seaweed without delay before the frosts start in earnest.

I ALSO recommend that pruning of ever-green shrubs is completed before Easter, which is late this year (normally no pruning after the middle of March). After pruning, the soft foliage underneath will be exposed plus if we have a bout of warm weather after pruning, new shoots will rapidly start to grow. A few snap frosts and this young growth will be badly effected.

I AM all for encouraging children into gardening and the new Yates book “Young Gardener – Get Your Hands Dirty” by Janice Marriott (Harper Collins rrp $19.99) is the perfect answer. It is packed with easy, fun projects, puzzles and even garden jokes. Make magic wands, construct a secret hideout in the garden or grow humungus fungus and learn what are the easiest food plants that children can grow.

Marriott is a NZ-based writer of children’s books and

children’s television. A great book for grandparents to give to the littlies.

“Since the Shack opened, business has been fantastic, particularly at lunchtimes,” he says. “We have 30 seats outside, there’s music playing and we’re in a great location, so we’ve been flat out every day.”

He also says he’s selling good coffee at $3, or $3.50 for a large. “It’s already got a great reputation and we have a nice, regular clientele,” he says. “We’re also getting loyalty cards, where if you buy four you get one free.”

With winter approaching, Brendan says he’ll put more focus on to takeaway, well-priced salads and a snack menu.
