Ecumenical Celebration Today At Mt. Carmel

St. Mary’s Assumption recently received notification on the outstanding performance of our students on Scranton Prep’s recent Scholarship Entrance Exam. Three of our eighth grade students have earned the distinction of being named an Ignatian Scholar. This award recognizes those students who scored in the top thirty scores and top quintile of test-takers on the exam. Because of their superior achievement on this examination these students received the Ignatian Scholar commendation. The following students have attained this distinction: Michael Burke, Maria Capitano and Mark Nobile. This award is named in honor of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Greater Pittson Ministerium congregations will come together for an Ecumenical Celebration of the Word of God on today, Sunday, January 18. The service, which will be held as part of the area’s observance of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, will take place at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Special music will be provided by The Every Voice Choir under the direction of Mrs. Joann Austin.
Begun in 1908, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated each year in cities and towns across the country and around the world.
The theme for the 2009 observance is “That they may become one in your hand” (Ezekiel 35:15-19, 22-24a). The theme and text for each year’s observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity are chosen and prepared by representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and representatives of the World Council of Churches.
The international texts are developed, adapted and published for use in the USA by the Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute, which invites written contributions from members of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and other ecumenists.
Following the service a reception will be held. The public is cordially invited.
Feast of Holy Spouses
The Congregation of the Oblates of Saint Joseph will host their annual Mass in honor of the Feast of the Holy Spouses (Blessed Virgin Mary & St. Joseph), on Saturday evening, January 24, at 5:00 p.m. at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary Chapel, Route 315, Laflin.
Principal celebrant and homilist of the Mass will be Rev. Msgr. John A. Bergamo, JCL, Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Scranton. Participation at this Mass will suffice for the Sunday Obligation.
A light reception will follow in the seminary community room, hosted by the Oblates of St. Joseph Lay Cooperator Society. All are welcome to attend this special celebration proper to the liturgical calendar of the Oblate Order, especially married couples of the area.

Young Adult Retreat
A Young Adult Retreat will be held on February 27 to March 1, 2009 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine, Doylestown, PA. A & R Meeting
The Altar and Rosary Society monthly meeting of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming, will be held Monday, January 26. Rosary will start at 7 p.m. followed by a meeting with guest speaker, John Piszak, EVP, Chief Risk Officer, Fidelity Bank, Dunmore. The topic will be Protecting Yourself Against Identity Theft. There will be a short video, followed by a brief talk and a question and answer period. This will help to educate everyone regarding this important subject.
Reparation Vigil
The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus & Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday, February 6, at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin. Father Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome. Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with a recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard. Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil continues with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, World Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15 p.m.

Once again prayers are needed for Richard and Tracy Drummond. Their 17th-month-old son Robert has been diagnosed with Leukemia. A second collection is held for the remaining of January services, the church will match up to$1000. Richard has been a faithful servant of the Church doing many tasks, all in service to our LORD. Mr & Mrs Drummond are also blest with two wondeful boys. So please assist in our cause by saying your prayers or offering a donation to the family. Now is the time for us to extend the Christian Charity to one of our own.
