An Update and Future-Focused Dear North Kitsap Families, I am writing to share an update and a few thoughts following our school board meeting last tonight. At last evening’s board meeting, the North Kitsap School District Board of Directors voted to accept the resignation of Dr. Evans. I will officially assume all superintendent duties, effective immediately. I understand there may be questions about the board’s vote and Dr. Evans’ departure. Because this is a personnel and legal matter, I ask for your understanding of the District’s decision not to comment further at this time. It is my hope that starting tonight, our district and our community can begin to shift our focus back to the incredible things happening in our schools. I have had the honor of recently attending several events that demonstrate there is so much to be proud of in North Kitsap. The collaboration between Kingston and North Kitsap High School band directors to create a combined high school band concert event, The performance I attended this morning at Pearson Elementary, where our students performed a pirate musical led by their music specialist, and Interacting with students studying culinary arts at The Odin Inn Student Restaurant and enjoying a delicious lunch while there. I understand that there is work to be done to enhance community engagement and build trust. Our team and I look forward to the opportunity to connect with families and the community, better understand needs and priorities, and do what we do best: provide our students with an excellent education. • Winter Weather in the Forecast

Yes, we see it too! With winter weather showing up in the forecast, we want to take this opportunity to remind you about our notification process in the case of delays or closures. Road conditions tend to vary greatly in different parts of our district. Families should always use their own discretion in determining whether to send children to school or pick them up early if they feel conditions in their particular area are not safe. Because student safety is our number one priority and many of our parents/guardians are not able to return home from work to meet their children, our district will only dismiss students early from school in extreme situations. Parents should have a back-up plan if this happens. In the event of worsening weather conditions, the district may decide to release and transport secondary students (grades 6-12) early so that buses are ready to pick up elementary students at the scheduled time. Types of Closures/Delays School Closure - If school is closed, all out-of-district transportation, meetings, field trips, after-school activities, practices will be canceled for the day unless otherwise announced. All evening meetings/functions scheduled to take place in district facilities will also be canceled. Two-Hour Delay - If there is a two-hour delayed start, the following schedule changes will apply: Buses will run 2 hours late No Morning Preschool No Breakfast Program No Out-of-District Transportation No Before School Activities No Secondary Zero-Hour Classes Limited Bus Service -School will be in session, however buses will be on snow routes, with limited service. When buses are on snow routes, the route will be the same for morning and afternoon. Early Release - In extreme conditions, school may be closed after the district has announced a two-hour delay due to further deterioration of the weather or students may be released early. Parents should have a back-up plan if this happens. The district may decide to release and transport secondary students (grades 6-12) early so that buses are ready to pick up elementary students at the scheduled time. Notification If there will be changes to the normal school day, we will let you know via our communication channels. Our goal is to make a decision by 5:45am with notification by 6:00am. We will not send out official notification that school is in session, however we may post a friendly reminder on our social media pages. ParentSquare - direct notification via email, text message and app push notification (must have current email and cell phone number in Skyward ) Website - An on-screen alert will appear on all pages Via social media FlashAlert Notification - sign up Via local news stations (when appropriate) Given these options, we will no longer initiate a phone call-out on inclement weather mornings. Snow Routes Alternate bus stops may be used during inclement weather. When snow routes are activated, official notification will be sent out with a link to Snow Routes. Snow Routes are posted at www.nkschools.org/snow-bus-routes . Visit the Closures, Delays and Early Dismissals page of our website for more information on the notification process and how to keep your contact information up-to-date.
